About the N-Level English Oral ▾

About the N-Level English Oral Examination

The GCE N(A)-Level English Oral (Paper 4, Syllabus 1190) has the same structure as the O-Level Oral. It assesses your ability to present ideas clearly and to engage in a discussion. It consists of two parts, each worth 15 marks:

  • Planned Response — plan and deliver a response of up to 2 minutes to a video clip and accompanying prompt
  • Spoken Interaction — discuss a topic broadly related to the video clip with the examiners

The whole paper is worth 30 marks (20% of the English grade) and takes about 20 minutes per candidate, including 10 minutes of preparation time.

Part 1: Planned Response (15 marks)

You will watch a video clip with an accompanying prompt on a computer screen. After 10 minutes of preparation, you deliver a planned response of up to 2 minutes.

  • Delivery (5 marks) — pronunciation, fluency and intonation

Part 2: Spoken Interaction (15 marks)

The examiners will discuss with you a topic broadly related to the video clip. You will not be asked about what people say in the clip — the conversation is about your own ideas, opinions and experiences.

You are assessed on:

  • Communication of perspective(s)
  • Engagement in a discussion
