About the PSLE English oral

The PSLE English oral is Paper 4, Oral Communication. It's worth 40 marks, or 20% of PSLE English, and takes about 10 minutes: 5 minutes to prepare, then about 5 minutes with the examiners.

PartWhat happensMarks
1. Reading Aloud Read one passage aloud, to suit the purpose, audience and context of a given situation 15
2. Stimulus-based Conversation A conversation with the examiners on a topic based on one photograph 25

The two parts aren't linked: the passage and the photo are on different topics.

What SEAB says the oral assesses:

  • Reading Aloud: reading fluently and expressively, with clear and accurate pronunciation.
  • Conversation: expressing personal opinions, ideas and experiences clearly to engage the listener, and speaking fluently with clear pronunciation and grammatical accuracy, using a range of vocabulary and structures.

SEAB doesn't publish detailed marking bands for the PSLE oral, so any score you see on OralCat is OralCat's own practice estimate, not an official mark.

This is the format in the current syllabus (PSLE English Language 0001), in use since the 2025 exam. As of 8 October 2026, SEAB hasn't published its 2027 PSLE formats page, and no change to the oral has been announced.

OralCat practises the English oral only. It doesn't cover the Chinese, Malay or Tamil orals yet.

How OralCat Helps

OralCat provides instant AI feedback after every practice session. Instead of simply highlighting mistakes, OralCat identifies your strengths, pinpoints your weakest areas, and recommends exactly what to improve next.

Reading Aloud (out of 15): Pronunciation /5 · Fluency /5 · Expression /5. Intonation is scored as part of Expression, and Singlish-influenced pronunciation as part of Pronunciation.

Stimulus-based Conversation (out of 25): Content & Development /8 · Language & Expression /7 · Personal Response /5 · Conversation Flow /5. PEEL structure is scored as part of Content & Development.

This is OralCat's own split, based on SEAB's objectives. SEAB doesn't publish PSLE oral marking bands.

🧠

PEEL: an OralCat technique

PEEL (Point, Explain, Example, Link) is a simple way to organise an answer. It's OralCat's coaching technique, not an SEAB marking criterion. We use it because it helps children give their opinion, back it up and add a personal example, which is what the conversation asks for.

P
Point
Answer the question directly.
E
Explain
Explain your reasoning.
E
Example
Support with a relevant example or personal experience.
L
Link
Conclude by linking your answer back to the question.

After each practice, OralCat shows which parts of your answer were well developed and which could go further.
